but why is poetry so gay, Lee?
"To me, poetry is queer because I read it with my own queer blue eyes.
I experience the world as a queer person, which means that I relate to different experiences through a queer perspective.

I have the liberty to read a "straight" poet´s "straight" poem as a queer text and that is my privilege as a reader to contextualise text according to how I make sense of the world.

Is my poetry de facto always queer, because I, the writer, am queer?
Yes, probably so. Because everything I write is a reflection of my human experience. And queerness is an inseparable part of it."

- Lee Jenner

My poetry addresses topics such as childhood trauma and experiencing the world as a queer woman and a mother.
In my collection “A New Eden”, I queerify and sexualise religious terminology, edging the thin line between poetry and erotica as a stance against the persecution of queer people. By using religious themes, metaphors and references when talking about childhood, sexuality and queerness I aim to re-create a world from my own past for the audience to experience and to reclaim space for queer narratives within that and to not only highlight how the church and religion have impacted queer people for centuries, but to ignite a change for these spaces to be transformed into more welcoming and accepting ones.
The nature of my poetry aims to offer possibilities for other people to feel seen, heard and accepted for who they truly are and to celebrate hope, healing and the journeys towards it.

Reborn
DECEMBER 2024
This is my first attempt at a poetry film, so please be gentle. The video and poem were born as a part of the "18 lines" project by Alex Vellis.
Each participating artist received a line of the poem "Wild Years" by Alex Vellis and were given free hands to interpret within their creative mediums.
I viewed the line “give me fuit, and forests, and fields” as a yearning for more life. Thus, the connection between moving through cycles like seasons we also experience endings and beginnings, which move through pain, acceptance into a new breathing, more life, more yearning. Since I filmed parts of this video on the 1st of December, which was an outrageously cold day, I experienced the shift from one season to the next firsthand and I have the bruises on my legs to prove it, if need be.
